Using the periodic table in magic involves creating systems where we manipulate specific chemical elements (like Carbon for growth, Iron for magnetism, or Oxygen for acid/fire) or their properties, often tying abilities to atomic numbers or groups, contrasting traditional four-element magic (fire, water, earth, air) with a scientific, physics, astrophysical chemistry-based system for unique powers, allowing for complex applications like bio-manipulation or energy storage for example. Common Approaches to this include: Direct Manipulation: Mages (often called "Chemists") manifest or control specific elements, like creating steel from Iron (Fe) or generating lasers from Neon (Ne). Sympathetic Magic: A small sample of an element allows influence over other instances of that element, linking magic to physical matter. Particle Control: We manipulate fundamental particles that are attracted to certain elements, influencing them indirectly. Property-Based Powers: Powers relate to the element's characteristics: Examples: Hydrogen (H): Lightness, energy. Carbon (C): Life, structure (plants, tissues). Oxygen (O): Acids, respiration, fire. Iron (Fe): Magnetism, strength, defense (Titanium). Noble Gases (He, Ne, Ar): Invisibility, lasers, immunity. System Examples include: Atomic Number/Ease: Easier elements (Hydrogen, Noble Gases) are simpler to use, while heavier elements (like Uranium) are more difficult but powerful. Chemical Properties: Alkali metals (Li, Na, K) relate to electricity/energy, while halogens (F, Cl) deal with toxins or purification. How this contrasts with traditional magic (classical elements): This system moves beyond Fire, Water, Earth, Air, adding scientific depth and variety (e.g., Sulfur for fire/incineration, Nitrogen for tissue). Unique Abilities: Instead of just "fire," you get specific control over combustion (Phosphorus) or heat (Oxygen), allowing for detailed magical applications like creating alloys or manipulating bonds. You basically have two options incorporating magic into "modern" elements. Either the magic ignores their rules, or it does not. Having the magic completely out of the scope of those elements kinda defeats the point of having them. So we have to work with them. The basic idea is this is alchemical magic. Grand scale alchemy. The central principle is that if you want something you have to give something of equal value. This is applied both in the material and in a morals sense. You want to create a flower? You better have the right amount of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and whatever other elements compose the plant you want. You could make the transformation of elements the central mechanic. Hydrogen to helium is easy; hydrogen to iron is difficult. Another option is to focus on the disassembly and assembly of things. So you can magically take things apart to gain the raw materials for the assembly. Or you skip the assembly and break stuff. You can create, shape, and manipulate the elements of the periodic table. These are pure chemical substances consisting of a single type of atom distinguished by its atomic number, which is the number of protons/electrons in its atomic nucleus and are divided into metals, metalloids, and nonmetals. Magic can only affect that which the caster knows, they must hold a mental representation of that which is being acted upon in order to manipulate it. This mental representation must be so complete that by conceptualizing a change in your internal image, the external object is changed. Most human beings do not see a mix of salts and silicates in complex crystalline latices, they see dirt. Even you, as an educated person in the modern day, who is fully aware that all objects are made up of their composite atoms, will very rarely think of them as such. It can be logically known but magic relies on intuitive understanding. Therefore when magic is weaved around the dirt, you will only be able to induce change on the object of which you can hold an image of in your mind. Now there will very likely be some people who can manipulate substances in terms of their chemical composition (chemical or biological alchemists), those who have devoted their lives to understanding and appreciating the chemical nature of all reality, or more likely just a certain aspect of it. These will be alchemists, who see hydrogen and oxygen atoms when they look at water, and thus are able to split the substance into its composite gases. This could likewise justify all sorts of magic. Summoning is the holding of something unreal in your mind so completely that it comes into being. Creating a living being atom by atom would be almost an impossible feat, but it’s much easier to have an intuitive understanding of life, seeing as we encounter it constantly.
